United Way of Cass-Clay (UWCC) offers critical connections and support for people in Cass and Clay counties who are struggling with hunger, homelessness, poverty and mental health issues. When UWCC moved to a brand-new office in Fargo, this organization dedicated to helping others had to ask for help themselves – for communications solutions.
“Before we moved, we had one main phone line for our team of 16 people. All calls came into the single line and had to be transferred to the appropriate team member,” said Summer Hanson, Director of Finance and Administration for UWCC. “While we were satisfied with our old phone and internet services, we decided to explore what types of new solutions were available for the new location.”
The UWCC team acquired bids from several companies. The estimate from Midco included VoIP (voice over internet protocol) pro, a simple yet sophisticated business phone solution that offers the freedom and flexibility to answer calls anywhere.
VoIP phone systems transfer voice data over the internet, enabling businesses to manage calls via desktop phone equipment, PCs and mobile devices. As a cloud service, there is minimal hardware required, which translates to lower up-front and infrastructure costs. In fact, VoIP systems fall under operational – not capital – expenditures, making it an attractive option for many small and medium-sized businesses.
When VoIP is delivered through Midco’s data, it comes through the region’s only wholly owned, operated and engineered fiber-optic network with 99.999% core network reliability. It’s a robust phone system that offers enterprise-level voice features at small-business-friendly prices.
Hanson agreed, “When we compared products and prices across providers, Midco had the most competitive offerings and rates.”
Midco’s VoIP solution gave UWCC access to helpful features and functionality, including the Softphone app, which allows team members to stay connected on their mobile devices, tablets or computers.
“The Softphone feature has been a game changer for our team!” said Molly Tweten, Senior Executive Support Manager at UWCC. “With many of our team members working from home, Softphone has allowed us to be efficient and respond more quickly to calls,” added Tweten. “As the locations of our employees change, it has increased everyone’s ability to work from multiple, random locations – and utilize time between meetings more effectively.”

Prior to their VoIP and internet installation, the team at UWCC felt trepidation over the relocation.
As is standard with every VoIP installation, Midco techs visited the new UWCC building for a site survey and prep for configuring services.
“We had such a positive experience!” affirmed Tweten. “The technicians were incredibly friendly and trained us on the equipment and features before they left, which gave us a really smooth start.”
Midco’s VoIP customers are treated to 24/7 network monitoring and responsive support, which allows teams to relax and focus on what they do best.
“Since our VoIP service was installed, we haven’t experienced any issues or interruptions to service,” said Hanson.
Business continuity is vital for UWCC as they work to ensure a better tomorrow for everyone in the greater Fargo metro area. Midco shares this passion to help the communities they serve, and to work in partnership with nonprofit organizations that are making a difference. That’s why Midco is a LIVE UNITED Partner, investing in UWCC’s mission and vision.
“By supporting United Way, companies like Midco help tackle our community’s biggest and most complex challenges,” said Christie Lewandoski, UWCC Director of Resource Development.
Investments stay local and fuel long-term community solutions. “We are thankful for the support Midco and Midco employees provide that creates the change our community needs.”
