Sponsorship Makes a Difference, One Athlete at a Time
Blazing-hot summers and bitterly cold winters mean air conditioners or furnaces are always running in Lawrence, KS – and their necessary maintenance keeps the phones ringing at Dunco Heating & Cooling. While a college town like Lawrence has no shortage of work for HVAC businesses, co-owner Diane Duncan believes Dunco’s reputation for excellent customer service is what keeps customers coming back.
"We try to treat our customers like we want to be treated," said Duncan. "We are very customer service-oriented. We’re there for the customer and to make them happy – and if they're happy, then they're going to tell their friends and their family that they had a really great experience. We pride ourselves on customer service, honesty and trustworthiness."
Diane and husband Wayne are proud of the business they’ve grown over the past two decades, and they have a lot of pride in their community, too. Lawrence is where they raised their family, and where their customers live – and it’s that gratitude that inspired the Duncans to give back in a creative, new way. Working with their Midco sales rep, they found a solution that raised Dunco’s visibility in the community, while making a real difference for local kids.
Small Business, Big Impact
In addition to traditional cable TV advertising, Dunco became the exclusive sponsor of Midco Sports Network® Kansas’ Scholar Athlete of the Month program. Each month, MidcoSN® highlights one outstanding student athlete from a Lawrence area high school. At the end of each school year, one featured athlete receives a $2,000 scholarship.
"It’s just a great opportunity for us," said Duncan. "Being a small business owner, I am glad that Midco® came to us, as opposed to going to a national brand. We're a mom-and-pop shop, a local small business that's sponsoring a local student and making a difference for them. We have kids who’ve graduated high school and gone on to college, and the scholarships that they were able to receive – we saw the difference they made for them, so it was important for us to give back and to help make a difference in someone else's future."
Increased Recognition, Infinite Gratitude
The Duncans have been delighted with the feedback they’ve received from their advertisements – and from their sponsorship of the Scholar Athlete program. By appearing in their own ads, Diane and Wayne attach a friendly impression to the name scrawled across their fleet of frosty blue vans. And they know it’s working, because people at the grocery store, in the chiropractor’s office and on the phone tell them so. Plus, the messages of gratitude they receive on Facebook from friends and family of the featured student athletes remind them why they do it in the first place.
"Our goal was to set ourselves apart and just get more involved in the community, and I think we really reached that goal," said Duncan. "I feel like we did make a difference and it did set us apart, and you know, it felt good, giving that check away."
She and Wayne look forward to sponsoring the program again, and they’re already dreaming up ways to create more of an impact for Lawrence student athletes – as well as for Dunco Heating & Cooling.
